ABSTRACT

With the rise in the applications of electromechanical devices, magnetic materials now play a key role in their proper functioning. Soft ferromagnetic materials are widely used in all the electromechanical devices. They have property of instant magnetization as well as demagnetization in the presence and absence of current flowing in coil surrounding it respectively. The behaviour of electromagnetism depends on the parameters during manufacturing it. In the present research, effect of surface roughness achieved on the mating surface of an electromagnet is studied with respect to its behaviour during movement of the electromagnets, i.e. attraction and repulsion between fixed electromagnet and the moving electromagnet or spring loaded plunger. In some electromechanical devices, it is observed that even when coil is discharged, two electromagnets do not get pulled away from each other. To resolve this problem, DMAIC methodology is used to investigate prime root causes and implement solutions. During the experimentation, two grinding parameters i.e. depth of cut and grit of the grinding wheel were varied. With set of the eight trials, obtained surface roughness is recorded with the help of Mitutoyo surface tester. Further, with the combination of four sets of Ra value bands for both the electromagnets, i.e. fixed and moving magnet, sixteen combinations of trials are undertaken to find the nature of attraction and repulsion between the two electromagnetic magnets during magnetization and demagnetization. With the use of box-plot charts, suitable parameters are decided with respect to the required surface roughness band for proper functioning of electromechanical device. Minitab Software is used for the analysis of the data.
