ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the economic boom, estimated at several millions of dollars by specialists, and points out that the pharmaceutical industry must manufacture liposomes on an industrial scale. The technician specialized in this type of formulation must rely on three key factors — raw materials, processing, and controls — and at the same time, keep informed as to relevant patents in order to avoid "doing or repeating what has already been done. Large-scale manufacture of liposomes is discussed in several articles and reviews. Whether the application be for the aging of cheese, artificial blood, or high precision liposomes in pharmaceuticals, all the processes described, as well as the one developed by Christian Dior, are based on the same procedure. The mixing of hydrophilic substances certainly does not require heavy investment in equipment, but at this initial stage of raw materials handling it is advisable to work under sterile conditions.
