ABSTRACT

Regeneration is a common phenomenon in biology and has been investigated for 250 years. 1 Studies on regeneration are always experimental and therefore depend on model systems. In the analysis of pancreatic regeneration various model systems have been used in a variety of animal species. 2-7 It has to be kept in mind when interpreting the data from regeneration studies that common phenomena of pancreatic regeneration have to be distinguished from those which are species- or even model-specific. Furthermore, the transfer of findings from animal experiments to the human situation and drawing conclusions with clinical relevance should be done with great care.
