ABSTRACT

An account is given of trace metals, especially lead, in surface soils and subsoils in Wales. Most studies of trace metals in Welsh soils have concentrated on contaminated areas. Davies and Roberts made a detailed survey of soils in north-east Wales and produced isoline (contour) computer maps of soil metals around Halkyn and thereby evaluated the extent of metal pollution. The initial sample collection was undertaken by officers of the Soil Survey of England and Wales. The high rainfall over most of Wales implies that Welsh soils are likely to be well or strongly leached. The grid survey data have highlighted the soils of Halkyn Mountain as being severely lead contaminated but "typical" soil Pb concentrations in Wales are comparable with those found previously in south west Wales or generally elsewhere. This survey has provided both statistical and cartographical information for trace metals in Welsh soils.
