ABSTRACT

This chapter presents a dental expert system for the evaluation of the dental developmental age, which is based on fuzzy system models. The fuzzy system evaluations were compared with those carried out by pediatric dentists who had special expertise in dental age assessment. The dental developmental age is used for planning the treatment and the evaluation of oral function in relation to maxillo-facial growth. Its operation is based on the relationship between general data on average time for tooth eruption, the number of teeth erupted, and other crisp data such as sex and present age. The chapter implements of a teeth fuzzy evaluation system employs the method of Mamdani. In this implementation, the control is performed by three distinct software modules; namely, the fuzzification module, the rule evaluation module, and the defuzzification. A genetic algorithm technique was used to design a fuzzy system for training set of clinical data.
