ABSTRACT

Antineoplastic therapy is associated with a high incidence of side effects. Hair loss is one of these side effects that affects the patients receiving antineoplastic therapies, especially chemotherapy. Hair loss has often been ignored by oncologists and other physicians treating oncological patients, but it has an important emotional impact for the patient because it negatively influences sexuality, body image, and self-esteem. In this chapter, we explore the current options to prevent and treat hair loss associated with antineoplastic therapies. In general, chemotherapy-induced alopecia is reversible; related to the emotional impact, effective prevention strategies have now been developed, such as scalp cooling, which shows promising results.
