ABSTRACT

The chapter examines different serotypes of botulinum neurotoxins and their aesthetic uses. It firstly examines the mechanism of action, followed by the pharmacology, citing that there are eight distinct serotypes of botulinum neurotoxins. It then focuses on the FDA approved botulinum toxins in the US, including Botox®, by far the most commonly used one, and Dysport®, Myobloc®, and Xeomin®, before then exploring the cosmetic effect to which they are used on patients, citing several trials that have been conducted. Moreover, it touches on neurotoxins that haven't been FDA approved. In summary, it mentions that clinicians should be wary of non-approved products as they can be dangerous to patients.
