ABSTRACT

India with the second largest road network size and population is susceptible to road accidents and mishaps. The poor infrastructure of roads further adds to the cause and many die to terrible accidents as a cause of mismanaged traffic conditions. The concept of VANET first came into existence in 2001, and since then, researchers have explored various aspects justifying the need for the development of VANET-based infrastructure and traffic management systems. We cannot prevent all road/highway accidents but if we put some effort in a smart way, we can certainly reduce the rate of accidents, probably reducing the death rate due to accidents significantly. The aim of this chapter is to understand the importance and necessity of applying VANET in India in lieu of various challenges of transportation faced today, that is, collisions, weather conditions, and safety concerns. The content embraces the basic building blocks and infrastructure requirements to build up VANET in order to develop a smart traffic management system that provides the users with a view to make decisions over issues that may appear in near future with respect to traffic conditions and the road environment. In addition to this, there are numerous applications of VANET for comfort and security to the user, such as electronic toll payments, weather conditions broadcast, traffic information systems, and on the road services. Thus, VANET is an impeccable solution for future transportation systems and upcoming discussion will provide the answer why.
