ABSTRACT

Liver cancer is estimated to be the sixth most frequently diagnosed cancer worldwide and the fourth leading cause of cancer-related death in 2018, with approximately 841,000 new cases and 782,000 deaths annually, indicating poor prognosis. Both the incidence and mortality are higher in men, and liver cancer ranks fifth in incidence and second as a cause of death in men after lung cancer. The highest rates are in men in lower Human Development Index (HDI) settings. Liver cancer is the most common cancer in 13 geographically diverse countries, for example, Egypt, The Gambia, and Guinea in northern and western Africa and Mongolia, Cambodia, and Vietnam in eastern and southeastern Asia (1).
