ABSTRACT

Primary bone tumours are rare and encompass a broad spectrum of diagnoses. In this chapter, we aim to provide the reader with a framework for the assessment, characterization, staging, and follow-up of primary malignant tumours of bone. The role and relative value of each imaging modality is discussed. The classification of primary bone tumours is also reviewed and, based on this classification, the epidemiology, clinical presentation and imaging features of common lesions and variants are outlined. In addition, the role of functional MRI techniques and PET-CT are reviewed. Finally, the role of imaging in follow-up and percutaneous image-guided biopsy are discussed.
