ABSTRACT

A palpable solitary thyroid nodule is the most common presentation of thyroid cancer. As most are benign, the primary role of imaging is to distinguish benign from malignant nodules. Whilst preoperative imaging for thyroid cancer is generally not exhaustive, high-resolution ultrasound is the imaging technique of choice in the assessment of thyroid nodules. The role of other imaging modalities depends on tumour histology. The incidence of thyroid cancer is rising worldwide; the cause is highly debated and not fully understood (1).
