ABSTRACT

Technical and economic analyses are often made to determine the feasibility of measures/projects as part of a flood protection plan. Mostly, institutional and administrative aspects are also addressed. But how the people living in the polders feel about the plans often gets next to no attention. This paper is devoted to the attitude of the citizens focusing on the situation in the Netherlands. How are people living with (flood) risks and how do they feel about it? What are the needs for communication on risks, and is compensation of flood damage recommendable?
