ABSTRACT
The die was probably cast in the first five minutes: John Horlock took on a mature student named Lakshminarayana to work on the intractable problems of three-dimensional flows in turbomachines and an immature one named Gostelow to polish off a few remaining problems in two-dimensional flows around blading. Predictably, Lakshminarayana performed brilliantly. Gostelow, although he made a promising start with his apparently easier task, is still floundering around over three decades later.
