Tunnelling and development of tunnelling technologies in Japan

Surface areas of metropolitan areas in Japan are hardly available for the development of urban infrastructures. Most of new infrastructures are now placed underground. Development of tunneling technologies in Japan, especially those of tunnel boring machine, has been playing an important role in the development of urban infrastructures. This paper presents general overview of the development of tunneling technologies in Japan, focusing on those of tunnel boring machine.
