ABSTRACT

Woodleigh Workers’ Quarters is a 4-storey reinforced concrete residential building on Contract 705 of the North-East MRT Line Project. The tunnels are 14m below the ground at the location of this building. The centreline of the northbound and southbound tunnels is 5m and 24m respectively away from the eastern end of this building. The approach taken during bored tunnelling is one of instrumentation monitoring and review of the data collected. The paper will first briefly describe the tunnelling method used and the geological conditions in the area. The design settlement profiles, volume losses and predicted damage category of this building are then discussed. The proposals taken by the contractor to minimise effects on the building is also covered. The actual settlement values and profiles, instrumentation data recorded and observation of the building are presented. It is hoped that this paper can serve as a useful reference for future tunnelling projects near old buildings with suspect or unknown foundations.
