ABSTRACT

A feasibility study has been conducted to investigate the potential of cavern development in the sedimentary Jurong Formation, which occupies the west and southwest Singapore. The study identified several areas within the formation were feasible for cavern development, based on comprehensive site investigations, including geological field mapping, seismic reflection profiling and deep core drilling. Two areas were selected for planning of specific cavern projects: an underground gas storage facility at Pandan and a warehouse cavern complex at Mount Faber. The paper presents layouts and construction cost estimates of both schemes. Both projects were found to be technically and economically feasible.
