ABSTRACT

The underground Mass Rapid Transit station now under construction at Changi Airport boasts some spectacular design features befitting its location at the heart of the “world’s favourite airport”. 26m high glass atria at each entrance, and an underground steel bridge spanning the length of the platform, make the public face of the station very different to the standard form of Singapore MRT station. Construction challenges include the need to support and reconstruct the foundations of existing airport buildings where the MRT tunnels pass beneath. The need to minimise disruption to the airport has led to extensive use of top-down construction which has significantly influenced the design of the permanent works.
