ABSTRACT

This paper presents an overview of the site investigations undertaken for the 11km underground Metro Corridor of the proposed Delhi MRT system. An overview of the engineering geology of the Delhi area is given together with details of the site investigation carried out to date and a summary of findings for the two main ground conditions expected along the route, the ‘Delhi Silt’ and Quartzite bedrock. Particular attention is drawn to the weathering aspects of pre-cambrian quartzites and the variability of the silts. A brief commentary is also given on the overall effect of the site investigation results on construction planning.
