ABSTRACT

A series of centrifuge tests was carried out at the Schofield Centrifuge Centre to investigate the effect of injection in dense sand on the tunnel lining deformation and surface heave. Finite element analysis (FEA) was conducted in plane strain to compare with the centrifuge results. It used the Cam Clay soil model with non-linear elastic soil stiffness at small strain. Analyses were performed for two values of coefficient of earth pressure. FEA predicts fairly well the surface heave and captures the changes of shear and volumetric strain when subjected to grouting pressure. The change of mean effective stress around the tunnel and the injector is also highlighted. The prediction of tunnel lining deformation has been less successful.
