ABSTRACT

A total of eight slotted end tubular connection specimens has been previously tested under quasistatic tension and compression loading using three connection types commonly found in practice. A parametric finite element analysis was then undertaken, based on finite element models of these connections, where the responses were verified with the test results. In the finite element modelling, a non-linear time step analysis was performed considering non-linear material properties and with 8-noded solid elements. A maximum equivalent strain was used as the failure criterion with the activation of a “death feature” of the elements. Differences were found between the finite element connection strength and the capacity as predicted by design provisions. Furthermore, these results show that a gradual transition between several failure modes takes place as the weld length increases. Also, the likelihood of developing the full efficiency of the tube net cross-sectional area, if a minimum weld length equal to the distance between welds is used, is illustrated.
