ABSTRACT

The Guadalfeo bridge is a continuous steel truss bridge. Its spans are 85+ 140+140 +110 + 110 m long. The deck of the bridge is 10.35 m high and 24 m wide, and the cross section of the girder is made of 5 main chords: three on the upper level and two at the bottom. Nodes of the truss are each 10 m apart and the diagonals connecting each node have circular hollow sections (CHS). On the top of the truss a concrete slab 30 cm thick was placed.

Concerning the construction method, first a span was erected using temporary piers. The next steel truss, 500 m long, was launched from the Southern abutment. The tip deflection of the truss reached about 2000 mm while launching. So, a 40 m high temporary tower balanced by two sets of 22000 kN prestressed cables was implemented. The use of the temporary tower reduced the total amount of steel on the truss to some 380 kg/m2.
