ABSTRACT

This paper concerns the in-plane nonlinear behaviour of shallow, parabolic arches with fixed or pinned bases whose cross-sections comprise of circular steel tubes with an infill of concrete, and that are subjected to uniformly distributed loading. Analytic formulations of the nonlinear equations of in-plane equilibrium are derived, and buckling equations are presented in closed form for antisymmetric and symmetric buckling. The significantly improved structural performance of a tubular arch afforded by the concrete infill is illustrated by an example.
