ABSTRACT
Despite of the decreasing German population, Hamburg is a growing city. Urban redevelopment of certain quarters, such as the “Hafen-City” (“Harbour-City”) with its future iconic building “Elbe Philharmonic”, contributes to the city’s fresh and modern image. The task of the diploma project “Sportwelt Hamburg” aims to create such an icon for the business district “City-Nord”. Therefore the new building, home to several sports and recreation facilities, not only has to provide perfect circumstances for all sorts of sports pitches, gyms and gastronomy. The quality of space, the internal impressions, the construction and the range of materials have to be appropriate to make the building a memorable landmark in an upcoming city.
