ABSTRACT

Bolted flange-plate connections are a common method for joining tension members. The main disadvantage of this connection type is the unpredictability of prying action, which occurs if the flange-plates deform and lever against each other under tensile loading. This paper presents numerical models for square and rectangular hollow section (RHS) connections with four, eight or ten bolts and the bolts placed around all four sides of the hollow section. The parameters varied in this study include the flange-plate thickness and the position of the bolts. The individual components of the connection (hollow section, flange-plates, weld and bolts) have been modelled to guarantee accuracy and efficiency. A full representation of the welds as well as the modelling of deformations in the flange-plates due to welding processes has been shown to be necessary.
