ABSTRACT

The Oktalok space frame system represents the ultimate in aesthetic and engineering efficiency in space frame structural systems. Circular Hollow Sections (CHS) are used as members of the frame. The advanced features and application of the Oktalok space frame system are introduced. Structural tests of the space frame are described, which include tests with the load maintained for up to 24 hours and the tests on failure of the frame. A simple approach is proposed to determine the ultimate capacity of the space frame. The member buckling capacity is investigated theoretically using non-linear inelastic finite element analysis. The joint of the space frame is treated as a semi-rigid connection with a rotation spring.
