ABSTRACT

This paper describes experimental study on extended end-plate bolted moment connections for square hollow section (SHS) column. The connection system presented here was devised to develop the easier fabrication technique for moment resisting steel frames with low and mid rise. H shape beams are connected to a SHS column using end-plates with high strength one side bolts (blind bolts) which do not require access from inside the SHS column. The SHS column near the connection part is reinforced by increasing the wall thickness to prevent excessive out-of-plane deformation of the column walls from the tensile or compressive force of the beam flange. This paper includes tests of one side bolts, material tests of the connection part where the column thickness is increased, simplified connection tests, as well as a full scale connection assembly test.
