ABSTRACT

This paper presents the results of an investigation into the use of open and closed form columns in low rise multi-storey buildings. A three storey building, conventionally designed as a braced and then as a sway frame (using the wind connection method), has been considered in order to compare the efficiency, in both structural and cost terms, of using either open or closed section columns. Whilst the study finds no significant differences in overall frame costs, other benefits associated with the use of hollow columns are identified.
