ABSTRACT

Hollow section columns, beams and beam columns may fail by stability phenomenae. These stability phenomenae are flexural buckling, torsional buckling, lateral torsional buckling, plate buckling and shell buckling.

This paper reflects shortly the existing design rules in Eurocode 3 for RHS and presents a single design method based on the Ayrton/Perry approach for various stability phenomenae. The paper includes also guidance on how compression and monoaxial bending may be verified more economically by an interaction formula.
