ABSTRACT

A preliminary series of tests have been carried out to determine the effects of local buckling and concrete confinement on the behaviour of thin-walled steel tubes filled with high strength concrete. A Fourier analysis is used to determine the half-wavelength of the local imperfections. The use of an effective area approach for local buckling of the tube wall is considered and compared to the test results. The confining pressures in the concrete filled steel tube have been calculated and the predicted concrete strength enhancement has been determined by several methodologies.
