ABSTRACT

Published design graphs restrict the fire resistant design of unprotected concrete filled columns to those including at least 1 % rebar in their cross-section. These graphs were produced using a version of FEUGODTU, a computer program developed by Valexy/Tubeurop, the French member of CIDECT. This paper describes a re-assessment made within the UK using a PC compatible version of the original FEUGODTU computer program. Test data is taken from CIDECT Project 15A/B (originally used to validate FEUGODTU) plus additional data from later CIDECT Projects and tests performed on behalf of British Steel pic within the UK, on loaded square and circular concrete filled columns using both plain and rebar concrete.

Test data scatter is markedly reduced and FEUGODTU is shown to accurately model the fire performance of both types of infill. As a result, new recommendations are made for the design of such columns in fire.
