ABSTRACT
The price per ton of hollow sections is much higher than that of open profiles. Thanks to the better static values of hollow sections lighter constructions are possible. However the total weight difference cannot fully compensate for the overall difference in the material price.
This paper shows that in many cases it is possible to design more economically with hollow sections than with open sections.
