ABSTRACT

The raccoon, Procyon lotor, is a common native mammal of North America. Its range extends from Panama to southern Canada and includes all contiguous areas of the U.S. except parts of the Rocky Mountain and Great Basin areas. 1 Canada has reported northern range extensions of raccoons in at least four provinces. 1 Raccoons have been introduced into France, Germany, and the Soviet Union where scattered populations thrive today. 1 , 2 In the U.S. both legal and illegal translocations of large numbers of raccoons from one region to another have been carried out for restocking purposes. 1 , 3 , 4
