ABSTRACT

Computer Controlled Scanning Electron Microscopy was used to analyze the mineral composition of two eastern U. S. bituminous coals. In addition, a procedure was developed to determine the association of the minerals with the coal matrix. The mineral content of each of the coals was also determined on a particle-by particle basis and used to examine the association of various minerals in the coal. Examination of the mineral/mineral associations showed that the distribution of minerals in the coals was not random. In particular, results show lower levels of association for pyrite than for the other minerals examined.
