ABSTRACT

There has been substantial progress toward meeting technical and business goals to commercialize products manufactured by plant cell processes. This progress is examined by reviewing how needs in two different markets might be satisfied by different plant cell culture product possibilities that share a technology in common. The two specific examples are PhytoVanilla, for the flavor/fragrance markets, and Taxol/taxoids, for the anti-cancer/therapeutic markets. There are several considerations involved when entering a plant cell tissue culture program to develop such products or line of products. This chapter tabulates the considerations involved in entering such a plant cell tissue culture program. Bench scale and analytical procedures have to be developed to assess the presence of the product and the co-products or impurities present. Overcoming the problems helps establish a technology that can hopefully lead to other plant-based product opportunities to benefit human health and welfare.
