ABSTRACT

Analyses of spatio-temporal data should neglect neither component at the expense of the other because the interaction can be so important. The tools needed to explore typical data sets are discussed using a simple unemployment example where only one time series is used for each region. As there was little spatial information and relatively more temporal information, the software Diamond Fast which provides tools for the interactive graphical analysis of time series was used to explore the data. Eurostat have data on imports of all kinds into the European Community (EC) countries and amongst the most important data are oil imports. Annual data set is typical in having a huge number of series and substantial structural changes. One notable feature was that the larger EC countries appeared to have lessened their dependence on individual suppliers by decreasing the share of any one supplier in their trade.
