ABSTRACT

The present study was started because a considerable difference was observed between the yields of potatoes on the “old” land in the south-west of The Netherlands and on the “new” reclaimed land. In general the ploughpan is more dense in the “old” soils than in the “new” one. But also the depth of root penetration is less in the old soils (60 cm) than in the new soils (>80 cm).
