ABSTRACT

In assessing the strut loads for design of excavation and propping system, various methods exist in current practice, either in a form of empirical approach or a numerical solution. However, these two approaches often present quite different pictures, easily confusing the inexperienced designers. This paper compared the predicted strut loads by both approaches. Limitations and the applicability of these methods are discussed in the light of the construction technology development Recommendations are made to achieve a possible better solution to the braced excavation problems.
