ABSTRACT

In this paper, the mechanism and analytical prediction for the ground surface settlement due to EPB tunnelling in Shanghai soft clay are studied. The mechanism for the ground movement in tunnelling is the soil disturbance due to shield tunnelling. The ground surface settlement is divided into five parts: a. settlement at early stage; b. settlement at the passing of cutter face; c. settlement during traversing of shield; d. settlement at the passing of tail void; e. successive consolidation settlement. The affecting factors for the above five settlements are discussed. By considering the difference of compressive curves for the undisturbed and disturbed soil at the same overload, a method to calculate the ground surface settlement due to EPB tunnelling is proposed. The proposed method is validated by comparing predicted results with monitoring results in the Shanghai Bund Tourist Tunnel.
