ABSTRACT

Mine tailings can be used economically to backfill the large voids created in the mining process. With very little fines, the tailings in their original form have low shear strength and can cause stability problems when the ore is removed from the surroundings. Additives such as cement can improve the strength characteristics, but at a cost. This paper describes the geotechnical characterisation of paste fill mixes from the cemented mine tailings from BHP Cannington Mine.
