ABSTRACT

The objective of this paper is concerning about the acoustic noise generated during the static penetration of soils using an acoustic cone penetrometer. As the penetrometer is advanced into soil, soil grains sliding and rolling over the penetrometer, sliding and rolling over one another and being crushed generates acoustic emissions. These acoustic emissions are recorded and analyzed by the data acquisition system. With a series of model tests, the acoustical properties of different types of soils are determined. Utilizing these properties, the characteristics and the profiles of the subsoil can be determined more accurately.
