ABSTRACT

This paper presents the methodology developed while analyzing selected rock avalanches. The methodology can be divided into four major steps which includes 1) gathering documentation, 2) field work including field testing, 3) laboratory testing and specific interpretation, and 4) analysis related to stability, mobility to the post-failure behavior, and energy balance. The proposed methodology allows an evaluation of block size distribution in the detachment zone and the deposition zone as well as the boundary conditions along the travel path. This methodology is applied to a case study, the La Madeleine Rock Avalanche (Savoie, France).
