ABSTRACT

Ring shear tests, which can simulate the change of pore water pressure in the specimen, are conducted on kaolin clay. The total normal stress is changed during the drained shearing, instead of changing the pore water pressure in the specimen directly. The shear stress of the clay specimen decreases along the residual strength line and disappears accompanying a decrease in effective normal stress. Then the shear stress mobilized on the slip surface is recovered by increasing the effective normal stress.
