ABSTRACT

In Polar and mountain regions, the open mining accompanied by the accumulation of waste masses of loose rock material on the surface of slopes becomes complicated because of cryogenic and glacial processes. Complex observations on dangerous displacements of waste rock dumps similar to natural rock glaciers in morphology and creep characteristics have been investigated in the North of Russia as well as in the mountains of Eurasia. Experimental methods for the stabilization of frozen technogenic dumps tested under natural conditions are as follows: 1) artificial change of rock masses movement direction apart from constructions; 2) erection of protecting dams; 3) artificial cooling and freezing of ground by means of the installation of “steam-liquid” thermopiles using the unlimited source of natural ground cold.
