ABSTRACT

Intensive research was initiated to develop more polymers based on silicone chemistry. Applications research showed the organic chemicals to be promising, positive discoveries and reinforced their uniqueness in the personal care industry. This chapter reviews the use of silicone polymers in the personal care industry. New categories of silicone surfactants have been synthesized. One new category is the silicone phosphobetaines. Organomodified silicone copolymers are of increasing interest in the sciences as well as for personal care applications. Their unique properties, which are quite different from those of conventional hydrocarbon polymers, have led to their service in widespread applications in the cosmetic and pharmaceutical industries. The applications for silicone polymers in personal care products are wide ranging and varied. Selective applications have been chosen as examples of how to use these polymers. Additionally, polymethylsiloxanes modified with cationic or amphoteric groups combine a high gliding ability with antistatic properties, which are particularly useful in personal care and textile applications.
