ABSTRACT

This chapter explains a guide for basic design of vessel traffic services (VTS) in a bridge area, where the results of recent survey on VTSs in the world are used. Main objectives to operate a VTSS are to prevent vessel traffic accident and to promote the efficiency of transport. Size of VTS system is mainly determined by the cost to establish, cost for operation and size of area which are mutually dependent. Survey on ship traffic is necessary to design VTS and design of bridge across a ship route. The inquiry format for VTS survey required data as annual amount of cargo handled, sum of gross tonnage and number of vessel entered or passed. The chapter introduces the practical design procedures for such VTS including route design and examines the effectiveness to reduce the disruption frequency. Traffic regulation usually gives jurisdictional foundations for authorization to traffic management by VTS authority.
