ABSTRACT

The design methods for assessing the influence of possible collisions are becoming more and more developed. Models for estimating the risk of collision are readily available for many ordinary situations. The treatment of the ship collision problems varies from continent to continent and from country to country. The development in ship traffic continues, and larger and faster ships may create new problems for bridge owners, bridge builders and others involved in marine structures. The Jiangyin Yangtze River Highway Bridge is a component part of the planned Coastal North-South National Trunk Road from Tongjiang to Sanya. The bridge is being built as a suspension bridge with a main span of 1385 m, and will carry six lanes of road traffic. The Ting Kau Bridge spans the Rambler Channel, one of the entrance waterways to Hong Kong harbour. The Akashi-Kaikyo Bridge crossing the Akashi Straits, with a shore to shore distance of about 4 km, is part of the Honshu-Shikoku Bridge project.
