ABSTRACT

This paper describes a series of preliminary non-linear dynamic soil-structure interaction analyses which were carried out for a large commercial project in Taipei, Taiwan. The explicit time integration finite element code Oasys. LS-DYNA was used to examine how the 35m deep basement would affect the design ground motions to be used for analysis of the 15 storey superstructure. The results indicated that the motions at the top of the basement were significantly different to those in the free-field. This suggested that lower spectral accelerations were appropriate at the natural period of the superstructure (about 1.5 seconds) than given by the standard code type soft soil response spectrum appropriate to the site.
