ABSTRACT

The verification of the seismic design of plant and equipment, principally glovebox systems, on the Sellafield Mixed Oxide Fuel Plant (SMP) is described in this paper. The overall seismic qualification process from design to installation and commissioning is considered. The difficulties encountered and the ways they were overcome in providing a comprehensive seismic qualification that met programme requirements are described. The paper illustrates that the full justification of the seismic design intent for plant and equipment in a new facility is best obtained through both design calculations and physical examination of the plant and equipment as installed.
