ABSTRACT
The impact of earthquakes in megacities is a complex problem compounded by multi-hazard issues, enormous inventory of vulnerable physical elements and socio-economic problems. Explosive growth and economic global linkages exacerbate the risk. A review of our state-of-knowledge coupled with predictions for expected losses from major earthquakes in the future provide strong reasons for the pro-active risk mitigation activities.
