ABSTRACT

This paper describes the development of a new dynamic testing technique for structures, in which a physical test of a substructure is coupled in real time to a numerical model of the surrounding structure. This approach represents an advance on pseudo-dynamic testing, since it allows dynamic effects such as resonance and strain rate enhancements in the test specimen to be captured. Initially the system is being developed using a linear numerical model, but a later version will also include modelling of non-linearity in the surrounding structure. The paper describes the methodology being adopted and discusses the early tests and simulations.
